Design of the J29 started as early as 1945. The same research data that led to the North American F-86 Sabre was used bt Saab engineers. The J29 was the first European swept-wing fighter. In May 1954 a J 29B claimed the world record over a closed 500 km circuit with 977 km/h. The privious record holder was an F-86 and the record stood for a year before another F-86-series plane reclaimed it.
