The first operational British aircraft capable of achieving twice the speed of sound was the Lightning. With an unusual engine layout putting the two turbojets mounted one above the other in the fuselage. Designed as a Mach 2 interceptor, it was later developed for ground attack. Served well till retirement in 1988.
